Local Attractions

Here's a short list of some of the many things you can do in and around Buenos Aires.  For more ideas, check out any of several travel guides

Districts of Buenos Aires

  • La Boca - Dock worker district, famous for it's colorful buildings and the origin of Tango.
  • San Telmo - Classic colonial Argentina, now a gentrifying bohemian district.
  • Palermo - The hip place to be (and dine, and shop!)
  • Puerto Madero - Modern buildings along the old port, home of the city's best steak houses.

Top Attractions:

  •  Plaza de Mayo and the Pink House - The heart of Buenos Aires, containing Argentina's version of the White House.  See the balcony where Eva Peron spoke with the people.
  • Florida Street - Elegant outdoor shopping street. Also, the starting point for the Open Bus tour.
  • La Recoleta Cemetery - Wander among the incredibly oranate tombs of the aristrocratic families.  Also famous as Eva's resting spot.
  •  Theatro Colon - the famous Baroque style opera house.

Nearby:

  • Tigre - Take the train to the edge of the delta region, where the rich and famous liked to weekend. Take a boat tour, check out the art museum, or just wander the open markets.
  • Colonia (Uruguay) - A small, artistic colonial town on the other side of Rio de la Plata.  It's a nice day trip by ferry.  Bring your passport.
